Music is integral to the funeral rites. It allows the community to express convictions and feelings that words alone may fail to convey. You may want to offer some of your favorite hymns for the funeral Mass. However, it is important that music selections are liturgical songs that are approved for the Catholic Church. There are many beautiful country and Christian songs, however, these are not appropriate for the Mass. It may be possible to incorporate these non-liturgical songs during the visitation or at the luncheon. The bereavement minister may be able to help you consider ways to use this music at different times.
The Holy Cross Family of Parish staff or bereavement minister will contact a church organist regarding the music selections for the Mass. If the family has an outside organist or soloist that they would like to have participate in the funeral Mass, they should discuss this with the bereavement minister at the meeting.
